Types of Plagiarism

Feb 11, 2020

Due to an increase in the frequency of plagiarism, researchers did a survey to rank types of plagiarism. The severe form of plagiarism is complete plagiarism and the most common is paraphrasing.

Moreover, it is better to be aware of all the types and how they occur

1. Verbatim Plagiarism

“Copying the full original content”   Verbatim Plagiarism also is known as word to word or line to line or complete plagiarism without citation the source.    People and most commonly students do this plagiarism when they are running out of time or ideas. They just copy and paste lines and sometimes whole paragraphs and presenting as their own. Sadly, but yes this plagiarism has affected a lot of students' lives as they don’t do citation of the source. If you are copying someone’s content, all you can do is put quotation marks before and after the copied text and properly include an in-text citation to quote the original text.

2. Accidental Plagiarism

“To copy accidentally and fail to quote the original source”   Intentionally or unintentionally, there is no excuse, the consequences are the same for plagiarism. Sometimes the writer puts his effort, writes something with enthusiasm and what happens, he faces rejection inform of plagiarism. This happens unusually, collapsing of ideas and text happens and text is declared plagiarized. This is you can say, a worse side of plagiarism detectors. It usually happens due to the following reasons:

  • Fail to cite a source
  • Fail to "quote” the author's exact words
  • Fail to paraphrase in your own words, even if cited
  • Fail to make a summary in your own words
  • Fail to be loyal to a source.

3. Self Plagiarism

“Rewriting or using same work of your own without citation”   It is described as the recycling of a text. It occurs when a person reuses some portions of his own copyrighted or published content. In this context, recycling fraud is a term used commonly to describe this practice. Articles of this nature are usually referred to as a replica or multiple publications. Copyright infringement may take place if the work of the author is transferred to another individual. It is a serious ethical issue when people assert that this publication consists of new material, although making fool of people is not a good thing. Proper citation is useful to avoid self-plagiarism but not every time. Just like if you own more than 1 blog or website and paste the same articles on both, even if you have cited the source properly. Google will consider one of them valid and will declare the other one as plagiarized content.  Here is an example for better understanding. Source: wikiHow

4. Mosaic Plagiarism

“Patching the phrases of the original text while keeping the same structure”

It is similar to paraphrasing, also known as Patchwork plagiarism.

In this people gather sources and copy-paste to make a new text and presenting as their own idea. It is although difficult to be detected by plagiarism detecting tools.

As an example:

Here you can see the original text style is not changed. The person has done copy-paste from 2 sources with altering a few words.   It is considered difficult to detect but Prepostseo can easily detect this kind of plagiarism.

5. Paraphrase Plagiarism

“Altering the words of the original text”

The common type of plagiarism is paraphrasing, in this type people alter some words within the paragraphs and not changing the writing style of the text.

Paraphrasing is not considered as plagiarism, if a person cite the sources properly. Moreover, if you pick up key points from different sources and rewrite it as your own ideas it is then considered plagiarism.

Additionally, if you translate a text in your own words and not mentioning the source is still plagiarism, as you are using someone else’s idea as your own.

Mainly if you even modify words and idea of the text is not changed this is Paraphrasing Plagiarism.

Example:

6. Global or Incremental Plagiarism

“Copying the full or more than reasonable part of someone’s speech”   This is when you copy someone’s ideas and present them as your own in your speech. Although, the words are not yours so this is plagiarism.   For example, a friend or any person write you a speech and you declare and represent it as your own. Just like in US campaign Melania Trump plagiarized Michelle Obama's speech.

7. Inaccurate Citation or 404 Error Plagiarism

"Referring a source to a null origin or an inaccurate source"   Plagiarism cannot be removed by only quoting the sources blindly. It is important to know which sources you are quoting, either they are accurate or inaccurate. Also, quoting an origin that does not exist anywhere can cause "404 Error Plagiarism".

For more information go to "manage citations" section.

8. Inaccurate Authorship

"An author(s) who gets credits without contribution or does not get credits after contribution to the work"

There are two forms of inaccurate authorship:

when you give credit to an author who does not deserve because he didn't contribute to the work when you do not give credit to the person who has contributed to the work
